What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) is a water soluble vitamin found in many fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin C is one of the better known and more popular vitamins as it is present in many forms in popular juice drinks and snacks.

What does Vitamin C Do?

Vitamin C is becoming more well known for it's antioxidant properties. As an antioxidant, it helps to fight the damage of free radicals in the body. Specifically, Vitamin C protects some fat soluble vitamins from oxidation.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in the development of collagen, an important part of the body's connective tissue (cartilage, etc.)

US RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. As such there is generally little threat of toxicity from overdose but it is important to understand Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) levels for this vitamin and any others that you take regularly. The Ohio State University Extension Office has put together a fact sheet on vitamin C which includes RDA suggestions for this vitamin.
