Making Sound Vitamin Supplement Choices

Nutrition is a fact of life-all humans need vitamins and minerals to carry out basic body processes. Vitamins and minerals have also been shown to prevent disease, treat current conditions and enhance life's quality.

In an ideal world, there would be no need for vitamin supplements-the food we would eat would be healthful and would provide all the vitamins and minerals our body needed to sustain itself. There would be no need to worry about disease prevention because there would be no need to worry about disease. This is not a reality - in fact, much of the food we eat today has little of the mineral content available just a few short years ago. The soils used to grow crops today have by and large been depleted of many essential nutrients. Though the food "looks" the same, it is less nutrient dense than in the past. Processing of natural food sources into "consumable" packaging also depletes the nutrient quantity of food.

Today's nutritional options (or lack thereof) make vitamin supplements of paramount importance. It's hard to get all of the nutrients necessary for the body even through a balanced diet, so it's important to know how to properly use vitamin supplements to round out the diet.
