Free Radicals

Free Radicals Quick Facts

Free radicals are extremely harmful to the human body.
Free radicals are formed through the mutation of an oxygen atom.
Free radicals exist throughout nature and are even present in the air we breath.
It is impossible to "kill" free radicals in the human body, the only way to combat them is through the use of antioxidants.

Free radicals are a popular topic of late. As more is known about the damaging effects of free radicals and oxidative stress, it's important to fully understand exactly how they work and what effect they have on the human body.

A good place to start is with a definition of free radicals:

Free radicals are mutated oxygen atoms. They are created when the covalent bond between electrons in two or more atoms are broken and each atom only contains one electron. This process causes rust in metals and what is known as "oxidative stress" within the human body. Oxidative stress has been shown to have some links to aging and disease. A great resource for further information on free radicals is the National Health Museum Sci Talk page on Free Radicals and Aging. You can find it here.
